To the south-east of Cape Town lies the coastal town of Hermanus, which is situated overlooking Walker Bay. The unique geology of the sea floor means that the bay is very deep close to the shoreline, with the natural shelter it offers attracting Southern Right Whales to the bay to calve between July and November each year. Both land and boat-based whale tours are available and a few days in this quaint town is always a great way to spend some time. The rest of the coastline is peppered with charming little villages such as Pringle Bay and De Kelders where some lovely B&Bs can be found. There are also a number of excellent nature reserves in the area, which are great if you want to explore on foot and learn more about South Africa’s hugely varied flora, as well as to explore the coastline. The Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is the best-known of these, whilst further east the De Hoop Nature Reserve is home to some excellent places to stay and offers a wide range of activities.Â
