Visit to Royal Palace in Phnom Penh

Discover the grandeur of the Royal Palace, a captivating structure in Phnom Penh with classic Khmer roofs and intricate gilding. Serving as the official residence of King Sihamoni, parts of the expansive compound are closed but exploring the Throne Hall with its 59m high tower, ornately carved thrones and opulent statues is a chance to soak in the splendour of the palace. Covering an area of 174,870 square metres, the Royal Palace offers an insight into Cambodia’s regal, cultural and architectural heritage.

Wat Phnom

Explore 700 years of Khmer history, legends and religious symbolism as you join the locals at the renowned Wat Phnom. Famed for answering the wishes of those who travel to the temple to pray, Wat Phnom is one of the oldest religious structures in the city and a significant landmark. The vihara (temple sanctuary) was rebuilt in 1434, 1806, 1894 and 1926 and the interior is a feast for the eyes, with ornate shrines, altars and vibrant murals depicting the life of the Buddha.

Visit the Silver Pagoda

Discover true opulence with a visit to the Silver Pagoda. Named for its lavish floor, which is adorned with an astounding five tonnes of silver, the Silver Pagoda is a dazzling display of Khmer craftsmanship. Ascend the Italian marble staircase to view the Emerald Buddha, a Baccarat-crystal sculpture seated atop a gilded pedestal. A solid-gold, life-sized Buddha studded with 2086 diamonds competes for attention, while intricate masks, gold Buddhas and many more bejewelled objects tell the story of the Khmer civilisation and Cambodia’s cultural wealth

Temples of the Forest

An early morning start is rewarded with a chance to explore Srah Srang and Ta Prohm in the glow of the morning light. A gentle 11km cycle offers a rare opportunity to explore the landscapes at a slow pace, soaking in the tranquil peace of the temples and exploring the 12th century complexes, now enrobed in a vast, tangled web of tree roots. Enjoy a peaceful breakfast before uncovering the little-visited temple of Ta Nei where you may find yourselves the only visitors. A tour of the ‘mountain with bronze peaks’, Ta Keo, completes the morning’s journey through the extraordinary architecture and historic wealth of the Angkor Archaeological Park.

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Take a poignant journey through the darker side of Cambodia’s history with a visit to two key landmarks of the Khmer Rouge. Explore the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, a high school that became an interrogation centre and prison during the Khmer Rouge regime and remains a haunting testament to the 17,000 people tortured before meeting their fate in the infamous Killing Fields. The mass grave sites of the Killing Fields Memorial in Choueng Ek bear witness to the atrocities of the 1975-1979 genocide. Today, Cambodia stands resilient, symbolising hope and recovery after more than two decades of brutality and conflict.

Mekong Senses

Escape the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh with a scenic boat trip to the islands of the Mekong. Sailing for an hour, you’ll see life on the riverbanks gradually slip into a slower pace and pass traditional fishing families on their houseboats. On arrival at Koh Oknha Tei, mountain bikes await for a leisurely 45-minute cycle along small dirt roads, winding past pagodas, orchards, market gardens and traditional silk weaving villages. Returning to the boat, you take a short ride to the traditional wooden Khmer home of Chef Nak, your host for the evening. Unwind with a swim and a drink before dinner where Chef Nak will guide you through Cambodia’s rich culinary history with a sumptuous tasting menu.

A Tour of Angkor Thom

The final capital city of the Khmer empire, Angkor Thom dates back to the 12th-century and exploring its parklands and atmospheric temples is like stepping back in time. Beginning your journey at the Victory Gate, you’ll explore the almost otherworldly beauty of the Preah Palilay temple. Walk through shaded parkland, passing the beautiful lakes of Phimeanakas and the imposing Baphuon, before reaching Jayavarman’s iconic Bayon state temple. Discover the mesmerising giant stone faces and intricate bas-reliefs depicting daily life in the Angkorian era before heading out on a traditional wooden boat to watch the sunset with a G&T.
