Visit Nicaragua
For many, Nicaragua won’t necessarily be the first on a bucket list, which may be a result of its complicated past revolutionary history and political situation, coupled with some geological and climatological difficulties. However, Nicaraguans are warm and hospitable people, who welcome tourists with open arms. Now is a fantastic time to visit, as it is far from overridden with tourists and you’re guaranteed to have a truly unique and authentic Latin America experience in this beautiful part of Central America.
The university town of Leon is a fascinating place to learn about Nicaragua’s whirlwind revolutionary past. Combine this with a few days in Granada, a beautiful Spanish colonial town, just a 30 minute drive from the capital city of Managua and located on the shores of the glistening Lake Nicaragua – Central America’s largest body of water. On this mystical lake is where you will find Ometepe Island, home to two imposing twin volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, the former of which is still active. A stay on this island will take you on rewarding volcano hikes, wonderfully scenic bike rides, local farm visits and wild beach walks. While often overshadowed by neighbouring Costa Rica when it comes to wildlife, Nicaragua is actually home to a number of abundant rainforests and excellent wildlife spotting opportunities, including sloths, monkeys, capybara, tropical birds, and caiman, among many others. The spectacular Corn Islands boast some near-empty palm-fringed beaches, excellent for a few nights of relaxation, and the Pacific is a surfer’s paradise with some wild world-famous waves.

Adventure
Ash-boarding on Cerro Negro volcano? Hiking up to the active Masaya Volcano? Kayaking on Lake Nicaragua? If you like keeping active and enjoy being outdoors, Nicaragua has plenty of options for you. There are also many excellent hiking trails, boat trips, birdwatching and wildlife spotting opportunities. Likewise, if you like being immersed in nature, Nicaragua has some beautiful eco-lodges (some more rustic than others) where you can fall asleep listening to the wildlife around you.
Undiscovered beauty
Tourism in Nicaragua is still relatively new, which is what makes it such a special place to visit. You’ll find near-empty beaches, pristine rainforests, an abundance of wildlife, majestic volcanoes and fascinating colonial towns which are, in comparison to some nearby countries such as Costa Rica and Mexico, somewhat undiscovered. Nicaragua will offer you authentic experiences led by smiley and welcoming guides and local communities, who will be delighted to show you their country.
Diversity
Nicaragua is a fantastic place if you’ve got multiple interests, or if you’re organising a family holiday and catering to different interests and want to please everyone. Unlike some of its neighbouring countries, it offers a more diverse overall experience. Within a small country, you have beaches, rainforests, cloud forests, volcanoes, ruins, as well as quaint colonial towns full of history and culture. There’s really something for everyone. If you want to see even more wildlife, a great option is to combine Costa Rica and Nicaragua and spend some time in Costa Rica exploring the nature reserves, wildlife and birdlife and then use your time in Nicaragua to visit some of the lesser known volcanoes, colonial towns and a enjoy a quiet beach stay.
Fascinating history & culture
Nicaragua is arguably the best place to visit in Central America if you’re looking for colonial towns, history, art and culture. Granada is a beautiful Spanish colonial town on the beautiful shores of Lake Nicaragua – the setting is peaceful and romantic! Leon is also an old Spanish colonial city with a vivid university scene and plenty of street art depicting the country’s revolutionary history. Take a guided tour around Leon and Granada to get a real feel for what it was like to live there during the revolution.
