Welcome to Nicaragua!
Upon arrival in Managua, you will be met by our local representative and taken to your centrally located hotel. Managua has been the capital of Nicaragua since 1852. To the north, you will find the old city centre that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1972. On the contrary, the southern part is where you will find the heart of the country’s culture and commerce.
Matagalpa enjoys spring-like weather year-round, lying more than 700 metres above sea level with average temperatures ranging from 26°C to 28°C and relative humidity between 75% and 85%, which makes it perfect for growing excellent coffee. The surrounding area is lush and green full of undulating fields and mountainous forests, perfect for agriculture.
A landmark organic coffee hacienda and private cloud forest reserve, Selva Negra produces 100% organic coffee, vegetables and flowers, and is a model of sustainability as almost everything is produced in-house, including their electricity. Birding is excellent around the property with more than 200 species documented thus far and you’ll no doubt hear howler monkeys!
Today’s activity at the lodge includes a ‘seed to cup’ coffee tour guided through the Hacienda, during which you will visit the nurseries, coffee plantillos and organic lab. The tour will continue with the picking and weighing of the coffee beans, through the full coffee-producing process, ending with a delicious cup of Nicaraguan coffee.
Granada is the most visited city in Nicaragua, dating back to 1524. The colonial city is a key place to stay; drawing locals and travellers alike with its wonderful colonial and neoclassical architecture, colourful cobbled streets and laid-back, easy-going atmosphere.
On your guided walking tour, you’ll explore “La Merced” church, the impressive brightly painted cathedral and the San Francisco convent. The tour will continue with a relaxing boat ride in the warm waters of Lake Nicaragua, passing by the the chain of 354 islands, which are made up of basalt rock piles covered in lush vegetation, rich in bird life, with plenty of egrets, cormorants, ospreys, kingfishers and oropendolas.
You will be collected from your hotel at sunset to head off to Masaya Volcano National Park. It’s an easy drive up to the rim of the volcano’s crater and the trip includes a visit to a viewpoint that provides the opportunity to look inside the crater mouth of the volcano, observing the glowing lava.
Nestled on a private island in Lake Nicaragua, Jicaro Lodge is an enchanting eco-luxury lodge. A hotel representative will take you on a short boat ride to get to the hotel. As you approach the island, you’ll be greeted by lush tropical vegetation and the elegant, thatched-roof structures that make up the lodge’s accommodation. The casitas have spacious rooms and comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and a range of thoughtful amenities. Step out onto your private deck or balcony to relax in a hammock, unwind in a cosy seating area, or simply revel in the serenity of the surrounding nature. This island offers a peaceful sanctuary where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and reconnect with nature.
Ometepe is made up of two imposing volcanic cones that rise up from the fresh waters of Central America’s largest lake. It is a land of legends – Ometepe has been sacred to the local Nahuatl people for millennia and its fertile landscapes are scattered with archaeological remains and ancient petroglyphs. You’ll be collected from your hotel today and then driven south to the small port of San Jorge. Here you’ll take a one-hour public ferry journey across Lake Nicaragua to Isla Ometepe, taking the time to admire this UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
During your full day in Ometepe, you’ll have a tour of the most interesting places on the island to learn about the rich cultural and archaeological heritage. You will visit the green lagoon at Charco Verde and see its diverse wildlife, the Coin and Pre-Columbian museum and there will then be time to relax in the natural pool of ‘Ojo de Agua’.
Morgan’s Rock is a beachside eco-lodge where sustainability, luxury, and nature coexist harmoniously. Situated on a 4,000-acre private reserve on the Pacific coast, the resort features 15 beautifully designed bungalows, constructed from locally sourced materials to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. Each bungalow offers breathtaking views of the lush jungle or the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean. For adventure seekers, Morgan’s Rock offers thrilling opportunities such as surfing, kayaking, horseback riding, and zip-lining through the treetops. And when you want to unwind, head to the pristine private beach, where you can soak up the sun, swim in the crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoy the serenity.
Leon is the artistic and intellectual heart of Nicaragua, the colonial capital for three centuries and the former home of its three greatest poets, including Ruben Darío. The original city was set at the foot of the Momotombo volcano, but was destroyed in 1609 by a violent earthquake and eruption; it was eventually rebuilt in its current location 90 km north of Managua. León’s historic Cathedral has been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 2000 and the city is a base for volcanoes hiking and culture tours highlighting the city’s revolutionary history, colonial architecture and artistic traditions.
This morning you will enjoy a tour of some of its highlights with your guide, starting at its colonial heart with a visit to the cathedral, the largest in Central America, and the main plaza. During the walking tour you will get to know the historic murals of the city and will understand the role played by León in the social, economic and political development of Nicaragua.
