Unique People

The people of the Dominican Republic are a mix of Taíno, European and African backgrounds, and throughout their history they have welcomed Jewish and Japanese communities as well as UNESCO-proclaimed Afro-Caribbean groups. There’s now doubt you’ll find the people charming through their laid-back, warm and friendly demeanour. You’ll be able to enjoy delicious Caribbean flavoured gastronomy with a mix from all its different roots and not to mention its abundance of truly fresh and delicious tropical fruits.

Diverse Geography

The Dominican Republic is blessed with both the Caribbean Sea in the south and the Atlantic Ocean in the north with over 900km of coastline. This contributes to its unique and diverse geography, allowing travellers to explore beaches, deserts and rainforests as well as the highest mountain range in the Caribbean, all within just 3 hours of driving.

Sabor

The Dominican Republic is full of ‘sabor’ – which could loosely be translated as ‘rhythm’ or ‘swing’. Typical genres you’ll hear are merengue, bachata, son and reggaeton and Dominicans aren’t discrete with their music – you’ll hear it walking down the streets booming from people’s homes, cars and shops, and if you’re lucky enough to be in Santo Domingo on a Sunday evening you’ll have the opportunity to experience a free local concert at the Ruins of San Francisco in the colonial city of Santo Domingo, by the group Bonyé. Their music is an eclectic mix of genres including merengue, guaracha, son, bolero and salsa – don’t be shy to join the locals dancing in the square!

Wildlife And Birdlife Galore

The Dominican Republic is famed for its countless species of flora and fauna among which you’ll find cacti flowers, endemic hawks and humpback whales. With 12 national parks, 9 nature reserves as well as rivers, lakes and its two distinct coastlines, the birdlife is prolific, including flamingoes! Diving and snorkelling are also popular activities and it’s not uncommon to spot hawksbill turtles, starfish and various types of rays. From January to April, The Dominican Republic is a fantastic place to spot the northern humpback whales.
