For a true sense of wilderness, cross the cobalt waters of the Lago Argentino, passing ice floes and giant icebergs before you land on the shores of this historic estancia. Adventure-filled days include 4×4 drives to lofty viewpoints over the icy Cristina channel; riding up the river valley with hardy gauchos at your side, and trekking through native forests that lead to cascading waterfalls. The estancia has 20 en-suite rooms with jaw-dropping views of the mountains. The open bar invites guests to gather and share stories of their wild adventures after a warming Patagonian dinner prepared by an excellent team of chefs. The boat ride from El Calafate to the lodge is one of the highlights of the journey, passing glaciers and mountainous backdrops. If you enjoy horseback riding or fishing, this is an excellent spot for both and trekking to Fossil Canyon is highly recommended. The food here is traditional and simple – very much a farm-to-table affair. Equally, rooms are charming and comfortable but without any frills. Estancia Cristina is a magical place to come for a wild Argentine experience of authentic life in Patagonia.
