Combining chimpanzee and gorilla trekking, this is our wild odyssey through Rwanda and Uganda’s thriving hilltops. This journey pays homage to the beauty, playful spirits, strength and vigour of Africa’s best, and wildest, primates.

Highlights

  • Trek in pursuit of the elusive mountain gorilla, through the Virguna Mountains where over one third of the world’s population now resides.
  • Dine in the centre of the Gisakura Tea Estate at Nyungwe House in Rwanda, where a personally curated menu awaits in a setting of complete serenity and privacy.
  • Set out in pursuit of chimpanzees in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park as you begin at dawn with your expert guide leading the way.
  • Stay in some of east Africa’s most luxurious and indulgent properties, hand-selected based on their trekking routes and primate inhabitants with all the comforts of home, and excitement of the wild.

Day 1 - 4: Bwindi Lodge, Uganda

  • Embark on your first gorilla trek through the Virunga Mountains
  • Enjoy complimentary spa treatments and massages, including the famous Rungu massage at the Humula Forest Spa

In the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, begin this wild journey overlooking the primeval Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. With a blanket of mist intertwining with a canopy of trees that date back more than 25,000 years, this landscape indoctrinates you into a world unto your own. Here, the odyssey will begin.

In pursuit of Africa’s best primates, embark on your first gorilla trek from the footpath on your doorstep, taking you as close as 10m to the species that evades most of humankind. With only eight visitors being allowed per gorilla group each day, this activity is not only deeply exclusive, but also wholly considerate of the animals and their home.

Day 4 - 7: Mount Gahinga Lodge, Uganda

  • Trek the Nyakagezi family of mountain gorillas and see the rare golden monkeys in the Mgahinga National Park
  • Visit the Gahinga Batwa Village and share the culture of the oldest inhabitants of the Central Africa rain forest

Moving onto Mount Gahinga Lodge, venture into the Mgahinga National Park, where you can follow the footsteps of the Nyakegezi family of mountain gorillas.

When you’re not in close proximity to the primates, keep your eyes to the sky as you spot some of the 150 bird species only found in Uganda.

Day 7 - 10: Kwitonda Lodge, Rwanda

  • Trek in search of golden monkeys through the Volcanoes National Park
  • Stay at Kwitonda Lodge, named after a legendary silverback gorilla, is located on 178 acres and shares a 1.2km border with Volcanoes National Park – the only lodge within such close proximity of the park

From Uganda to Rwanda, check-in at Kwitonda Lodge. With just eight luxurious suites sitting on the edge of Volcanoes National Park, this is where over a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas call home. With the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes lining your horizon, trek in search of golden monkeys as they forage in the forest and swing amongst the canopies.

Being the only part of the world where this animal now resides, this opportunity is not one that will last forever, and is a stark reminder of the fragility of our wilderness.

Day 10 - 13: One&Only Nyungwe House, Rwanda

  • At the break of dawn, your expert guide will lead you into the heart of the jungle, on the trail of chimpanzees to see them in their natural habitat
  • Wander through the lush tea plantation that surrounds your jungle resort with a guided tea estate tour, an elegant African tea ceremony and a unique private dining experience

For the final stop on this wild odyssey, you complete your time in the far reaches of eastern Africa with time spent chimpanzee trekking. Begin at the break of dawn, and follow your guide into the thriving forest as chimpanzees swing from fig trees, turning the wild into their playground right above your heads.

Conclude the journey with a private dining experience among the Gisakura Tea Estate, a spectacular display of vibrant green farmland that welcomes you into the wilderness.
