Mount Gahinga Lodge
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda
Why we love it
Mount Gahinga Lodge nestles in the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes on the border of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mounts Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhuvura provide an impressive backdrop to this unique lodge. Each of the nine bandas are named after volcanoes in the Virunga chain. They are based around traditional pygmy huts – albeit with more luxurious modern comforts. The mature tropical garden setting and rustic style cottages combine to give the impression of staying in the bygone era of Hemingway.
Spend the day with the Batwa Pygmies, widely regarded to be the oldest surviving peoples of central Africa, to experience
their ancient life. The area, because of its varied habitats, is also famous for birding with over 180 birds species and for tracking the endangered golden monkeys.
The main building features a rustic living space with a warm central fire that offers the ideal environment for relaxing at the end of the day, with the terrace outside and a spacious sunroom adjoining the living area completing the peaceful and open style. Each of the bandas has been thoroughly renovated to offer unparalleled luxury in the region. Each room has a fireplace and an en-suite bathroom with showers and flush toilets and each is reached by taking a short stroll through the large gardens that fill the lodge with life.
Hear the pounding of the gorilla's chest and the rummaging of the leaves as you track the family through the Mgahinga National Park from the lodge.
Track these playful and endangered primates, characterised by their bright golden bodie, in the foothills of the volcanic mountains of Mgahinga National Park.
Visit the community of Uganda's longest surviving tribes for a chance to witness how they have lived for generations in the forest, as well as their traditional dance and song.
Embark on a challenging hike in the morning to climb one of the volcanoes in the Virunga chain to enjoy a rewarding panoramic view at the top.
Enjoy a more leisurely walk from Gahinga Lodge to the top of a small hill where you can look down into the Kisozi Caldera, formed by volcanic eruptions.
Don't miss the opportunity to see some of Uganda's 1,000 species of birds, 150 of which are endemic to the region.

It was absolutely magical. As soon as we turned the corner and saw the first gorilla, I started to cry because I was so happy. They were also fantastic lodge recommendations from the True Travel team! Bwindi Lodge was hands down my favourite, amd we also loved getting out of the car and hiking to get there. As you’ll see, my dream of being close to the gorillas really came true. We had such a wonderful time, and thank you for your help making it come to life.
