Kenya is the original safari destination, largely made up of privately-owned game reserves that allow for exclusive experiences, with long ties between the country and the British royal family. The true beauty of Kenya comes from the sheer variety of landscapes ready to be explored: from the dry deserts of Turkana in the north to Mount Kenya in the centre (the second-highest mountain in Africa) with beaches and jungles in between. Explore the rugged mountains in the north from a helicopter and then find yourself riding through the green Chyulu hills amongst some of the biggest tuskers in the world. With an incredible array of all the best wildlife in the bush to the turquoise waters of the Swahili coastline, Kenya really does have everything to offer.

Deciding when to go to Kenya is an enduring point of consideration for visitors, and for the most part, it’s a country that can be visited successfully at any time of year. However, there are certain periods within the year that are more favourable than others.
Game viewing in Kenya remains consistently good year round, and – being equatorial – temperatures remain high even in the rainy seasons. Of course, Kenya’s major drawcard is the Great Wildebeest Migration which it plays host to, usually from July to October. Our month-by-month guide is designed to give you an idea of what to expect at a given time of year, and help you decide when to travel.

The infamous Masai Mara can be found in Kenya, but there are plenty of other areas where wildlife and game viewing can be enjoyed. Matthew’s Range and Meru National Park can get you away from the crowds for a truly wild experience, whilst the Kenyan Coast and Lamu island offer the perfect beach retreat.
Boasting exceptional year round wildlife, the Masai Mara is a must visit for anyone on safari in Kenya for the first time. A Masai Mara holiday rarely disappoints, this is especially the case from July to October during the Great Wildebeest Migration. Well-managed examples of sustainable tourism have developed as conservancies around the Masai Mara Game Reserve, these areas are carefully controlled areas of land, managed by the high-end safari lodges who lease them from the local Masai.
