Fundu Lagoon
Pemba Island, Zanzibar
Why we love it
Fundu Lagoon is located on Pemba Island, which is part of the Zanzibar archipelago and lies to the north of its larger sister island, Unguja. The hotel is situated on a remote and beautiful beach on the south western side of Pemba which is only accessible by boat.
There are eighteen rooms, consisting of canvas tents set under makuti (thatch) roofs on wooden decks, all with views over the sea. The rooms are equipped with large double or twin beds, mosquito nets, ceiling and standing fans as well as indoor and outdoor seating areas. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with a hot water shower, toilet and basin. The rooms are connected to the main buildings by wooden walkways and paths through indigenous forest. Some rooms are situated along the beach front with the others perched on the hillside, all of which have panoramic views over the lagoon. Two of the eighteen rooms are suites, with their own private chill out deck and plunge pool, and four are superior suites which also have an extensive indoor and outdoor lounge space and mezzanine platform.
The main hotel is built under thatch and is large, airy and overlooks the sea. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the main dining area or at the jetty bar followed by a three course lunch and dinner, all with a choice of dishes of international standard. Some meals will be served on the white sandy beach.
Fundu is the epitome of a “bare foot paradise” with a distinct Robinson Crusoe air in a remote and peaceful location. It is a place for guests to relax and a variety of massage and beauty therapies are available.
Fundu Lagoon has some of the world’s leading dive sites. The resort has a fully equipped dive centre offering a fleet of boats and the marine life is exciting even when snorkelling. Water-skiing, windsurfing and fishing are also available. The nearby
mangroves are also easy to explore by canoe. Sunset cruises by dhow are a romantic way to take in the surrounding beaches and islands.
Fundu’s infinity swimming pool has a stunning soft curve with panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. Raised up on one of Fundu’s hillsides, the pool is surrounded on three sides by natural forest. The poolside bar serves cool drinks and a variety of snacks throughout the day and the spa is located nearby.
Fundu Lagoon’s restaurant offers some of the best cuisine in East Africa. The main restaurant is set under a tropical thatch canopy and open to the sea. Fundu’s cuisine reflects the culture of Zanzibar; a subtle fusion of Arabic, Indian, Swahili and Colonial influences overlay more familiar vegetable, fish and meat choices. The daily catch and unusual tropical fruits add an exotic twist to traditional international dishes.
Fundu Fusion Spa embraces the ancient healing philosophies of both Africa and Asia with a fusion menu unique to Fundu. The Fundu Lagoon massage captures the magic of the place and the foundation for essential oils, heavenly florals, precious woods, exotic spices and succulent citruses to nuture, sooth, balance, clarify and enhance.
Fundu Lagoon has its own exclusive beach where you might see the local fishermen bringing in their daily catch. Nearby there is also a paradise beach at Misali Island, a short boat trip away and inside the protected marine conservation areas. Green and Hawksbill turtles are the only things who may disturb you on the white sand beaches. There are palm trees fringing the white sands which offer a shady picnic spot. The warm turquoise shallows are ideal for snorkelling amongst brightly coloured reef fish.
Find some flippers and dive or snorkel into the Indian Ocean at this five star PADI resort, where shallow coral lagoons drop off to spectacular depths.
Be dropped off at a paradisiacal beach situated within the marine conservation area, where only green turtles can disturb you from relaxing on Misali's white sands.
Take a scenic fishing trip around the Pemba Channel and small barrier islands to catch dorado, yellow fish tuna and, for the adventurous angler, giant trevally.
Pamper yourself with a range of exclusive treatments inspired by local spices, or relax in Fundu Lagoon's infinity pool overlooking the ocean.
Paddle through the mangroves, spotting fish, turtles and exotic birds in their roots whilst taking in the uniqueness of this coastal habitat.
Sail to the ancient capital of Pemba and wander through mysterious carved ruins overtaken by tree roots and foliage.
Cruise on a traditional Swahili sailboat and relax on its wooden deck whilst enjoying a sundowner with a Pemba sunset.
Be guided through this rainforest in the north of Pemba, where you will spot monkeys and spectacular birdlife before settling into a picnic lunch on the beach.

True Travel planned our honeymoon to Uganda, Rwanda and Zanzibar. The insight of the team at TLT helped us choose locations and lodges which otherwise we’d never have known about – they also saved us over £1,000 by recommending cost saving flights and other logistics. I have already recommended their service to friends and will continue to do so.
