Why we love it
Chongwe River Camp is nestled under a complete canopy of huge winter thorn acacias, in an area where elephants are more numerous than people – there are no fences and the animals have complete right of way. Occupying a unique and unrivalled location the camp is located directly opposite Mana Pools and looks onto the confluence of the Chongwe channel and Zambezi River, with the mountains of the escarpment on the north. The Chongwe channel is perfect for canoe trips as it is relatively free of hippos and strong currents.
All eight large, well appointed Mulati tents are kept cool by their thatched roofs and situated under a canopy of albida throns, surrounded by lawns with stunning river views. They have recently been upgraded and offer superb accommodation. The open-air en-suite bathrooms mean guests can shower both under the stars and in the early morning sunshine. Game including elephant, lion, hippo and buffalo, amongst many others, can sometimes all be viewed from your tent.
Grab a window seat and enjoy the sun on your face as you drive through the bush to spot bathing elephants and other wildlife scenes.
Head out under the African moon listening to the sounds of the bush, such as millions of tree frogs, to spot nighttime bush action.
Enjoy the thrill as you explore the terrain of the Lower Zambezi on foot for the most intimate experience with the African bush.
Set out on a leisurely exploration of the Lower Zambezi, commonly passing herds of elephants coming to bathe, drink or play.
Get into the fighting spirit as you fish for tigerfish, abundant in the waters by Chongwe, and known for their incredible combativeness.
Embark on a guided tour of Chiawa Cultural Village to learn about the Goba people and their traditions, including dances and songs.
Hop into a luxury boat on the Zambezi River for a different game viewing experience, before stopping for a sundowner as you watch the sunset.

The team at True Travel had a simple brief: to send us on the world’s best family safari. As soon as our boat headed down the Zambezi, it all kicked off; we passed a herd of hippos, a lazy crocodile and a giraffe drinking nonchalantly on the riverbank. A magical experience from beginning to end. Nothing was too much trouble and if we had any issue that needed resolving, there was always someone on hand to do this. Before and after, they were off the charts – simply an awesome team.
