Galle Fort Hotel
Galle, Sri Lanka
Galle, Sri Lanka
Why we love it
Situated in the very heart of one of Sri Lanka’s most historic locations, and named after it, Galle Fort Hotel is a remarkable feat of restoration and preservation. This impressive 13-bedroom 18th Century ex-Dutch villa offers an unparalleled combination of colonial grandeur and modern luxury, retaining its historical value and authenticity while also boasting some more recent creature comforts. In recognition of the hotels tireless dedication UNESCO awarded the hotel the Asia Pacific Heritage Award of Distinction, calling it “a masterpiece of cultural heritage and conservation”.
This boutique hotel has 12 charming air conditioned rooms and suites of individual design, opening out to the central courtyard and the swimming pool. All the rooms have king-sized beds dressed with canopied mosquito netting and crisp white linen. The inner courtyard, with a small garden and 10-
metre swimming pool, one of the largest in the Fort, offers a tranquil and exclusive area for guests. The charming bar-cum-cafe is becoming a favoured meeting point in the town as well. Meals can be taken on the terrace, the bar or in a grand dining room.
Outside of the hotel there are also numerous sights and activities to explore. Of course right on your doorstep you have Galle Fort, whose treasure trove of colonial antiquities, shops and cafes are all easily explored on foot, either on your own or with an informative local guide provided by the hotel. There are also whale watching cruises, guided bike tours, jungle yoga classes and private walks through a lowland tea plantation to name a few.
Explore this historic city, known as a 'masterpiece of cultural heritage and conservation', with a visit to the Portuguese Black Fort, the Old Harbour or the lighthouse.
Head to the harbour and take a boat out into the ocean for the chance to spot sperm whales and bottlenose dolphins.
Visit one of the oldest remaining Dutch buildings in the fort to see traditional mask carvings, turtle shell jewellery and Beeralu lace weaving.
Wander through the cobbled streets of Galle to shop at antique bazaars, local food markets and jewellery boutiques.

We had an amazing holiday in Sri Lanka. All the hotels, transfers, trips and experiences arranged by True Travel were perfect and all the arrangements went seamlessly according to plan. Our guide and driver, Thusita, was a really nice man and so knowledgeable, going out of his way to make sure that we experienced many of the Sri Lankan foods and traditions as possible. I would recommend True Travel to anyone especially if you have not visited the country before.
