Why we love it
A contemporary beach retreat on the coast of Sri Lanka, the Amanwella encompasses a peaceful coastline where nature, wellness, and the local community are intimately intertwined. Derived from the Sanskrit word for âpeaceâ, Aman, and the Sinhalese word for âbeachâ, wella, the name Amanwella is self-explanatory. The Amanwella is tucked away in a secluded and tranquil cove on Sri Lankaâs Southern Coast, offering guests a private and relaxing tropical hideaway. The hotel boasts 27 contemporary suites that dot the hillside overlooking the Indian Ocean, each with private terraces, dining tables and loungers. The layout and set up of the suites provides guests with total privacy in their own tropical home-from-home.
The restaurant looks out over the palm-fringed bay from an elevated platform and terrace, allowing guests to dine in the presence of stunning views. The restaurant proudly serves up the âcatch of the dayâ which is delivered fresh from the local fishermanâs boat, can not get much fresher. The ingredients are locally-grown, including curry leaves and spices, providing guests with a true experience of the hearty flavour of Sri Lanka. The continual tropical climate ensures fragrant spices, fresh seafood and vibrant fruits and vegetables all year round. Guests also have the intriguing opportunity to visit the local markets with the Amanwellaâs chef to discover more about the fertile islandâs agriculture.
Watch herds of elephant roam the grasslands and water buffalo cautiously eye the crocodiles of Udawalawe National Park, or head over to Yala to see if you can spot the elusive Leopard.
Fall in love with playful, orphaned elephants as they grow and develop in this safe environment.
Visit master potter B. Karunasena in his workshop to learn the skills required to craft his renowned terracotta designs, before you create your own unique piece.
Take a break from soaking up the sun on the beach, and see what marine wildlife you'll be able to spot in Amanwella's waters.
Farther out to sea, blue whales can be sighted on their annual migration from December to April, as well as sperm whales and spinner dolphins.
Try your hand at surfing, or simply enjoy floating in the ocean to the rhythm of the waves while the sun sets over the bay.
Visit one of the Ceylon tea plantations with an expert guide, or simply learn about the island's history of tea from Amanwella's own experts over an afternoon cup of tea.
Feel enlightened after a trip to the rock temples of Mulkirigala Raja Maha Vihara, whose wall paintings and Buddha statues will leave you feeling inspired.

We had an amazing holiday in Sri Lanka. All the hotels, transfers, trips and experiences arranged by True Travel were perfect and all the arrangements went seamlessly according to plan. Our guide and driver, Thusita, was a really nice man and so knowledgeable, going out of his way to make sure that we experienced many of the Sri Lankan foods and traditions as possible. I would recommend True Travel to anyone especially if you have not visited the country before.
