Hiroshima and Miyajima

Japan

Hiroshima is the capital of the Chugoku region in the South West of Japan. Despite the atomic bomb that was dropped on the city in 1945, the city is flourishing and is a fascinating inclusion to a Japanese trip. Visit the Peace Park which is dedicated to the event, you can even see the ‘bomb dome’, a UNESCO World Heritage sight – it is one of the only surviving buildings from the disaster. Afterwards, venture into the traditional Japanese Shukkeien garden for a serene stroll or stop by at the beautiful Hiroshima Castle. If you are feeling peckish, sample a delicious pancake-style snack, Hiroshima’s Okonomiyaki.Making the hour trip to the small sacred island of Miyajima is a must. The iconic floating shrine of Itsukushima is here, along with many other beautiful and intricate statues. If you are confident in your stamina, walk up Mount Misen for an incredible view – you may even be accompanied by the wild deer that live nearby. If you don’t feel like walking, do not fear as the cable car will offer you panoramic views and you can rest your feet. If you stay in a traditional Ryokan overnight, you will avoid the crowds and experience a blissfully relaxing evening.
