Day 1-4

TOKYO, Japan

  • See a classical Japanese dance at a kabuki theatre
  • Rise early to visit the bustling fish market for breakfast

A busy and ultramodern capital, Tokyo combines traditional Japanese life with neon skyscrapers.

Stay at the flawlessly designed Aman Tokyo for breathtaking views of the city skyline and Mount Fuji. Rise early for breakfast at the Tsukiji fish market, followed by a wander through Akihabara, also known as Electronic Town. Here you can get a feel for the more modern side of Tokyo as you immerse yourself in the world of anime, manga comics and themed cafes. Stop for a quick lunch in Yurakucho before spending the afternoon experiencing the more traditional side of Japan’s capital. Marvel at ancient shrines as you stroll through the sprawling Imperial Palace Gardens. Enjoy a private visit to the Sumo Stables to observe the wrestlers in action and experience the sound of traditional Japanese drums before learning the basics yourself. Head to Shibuya for the best shopping and a glimpse at the iconic Tokyo crossing, followed by dinner at one of the city’s many world-class restaurants.

Day 4-7

KYOTO, Japan

  • Have tea with a geiko in Kyoto’s geisha district
  • With your private guide visit Japan’s first capital, Nara

Once the capital of Japan, Kyoto brims with temples, gardens, and imperial palaces to spend hours wandering around.

Arrive by bullet train from Tokyo. Get a feel for ancient Japanese culture as you make your way around the magnificent temples and Shinto shrines of Kyoto. Stay at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton on the banks of the Kamo River and enjoy a tea ceremony with a Maiko in the nearby Gion District. Wander through the towering Bamboo Groves in Arashiyama, take a day trip to scenic Nara Park and taste the incredible selection of street food in the Dotonbori district of Osaka (also famed for its neon lights).

Day 7-9

HIROSHIMA, Japan

  • Take a boat trip to the nearby island of Itsukushima to see picture-postcard scenery of Japan
  • Pay homage to the past at the UNESCO Atomic Bomb Dome

A contrast to the ancient Kyoto, Hiroshima is a modern city with a sad history linking to World War II.

Base yourself at the Sheraton Grand in Hiroshima to visit the fascinating Peace Memorial Park and other historical sites paying tribute to the city’s turbulent past. Explore quaint, market lined streets and sample fresh local oysters the size of your hands. Nearby Miyajima offers a taste of peaceful island life, populated with sacred deer and serene shrines that appear to be floating in the water, such as the iconic Itsukushima Torii Gate. Alternatively, take a cable car to the top of Mt. Misen to observe the beautiful surroundings of Hiroshima Bay.

Day 9-11

HAKONE, Japan

  • Explore Lake Ashi in the crater of Mount Fuji by boat and enjoy the Gondola network across the mountain
  • Spend a few nights in a traditional ryokan for the ultimate in relaxation to include Onsen bathing

Stay in a mountainous national park dotted with lakes to unwind after a busy city-hopping trip.

Hakone National Park can be explored by foot on the many hiking trails, or by boat as you glide across the mesmerising Lake Ashi. The mountainous region is also home to ÅŒwakudani (‘Great Boiling Valley’) which can be admired from above in a cable car. Stay at Yoshimatsu, a traditional ryokan that sits amongst nature and offers a spoiling array of hot spring baths with breathtaking views of Mount Fuji.

Mike & Rose

We felt so relieved on arrival into Tokyo that everything had been prearranged. Japan can feel quite busy and mad, but we knew that Katie had taken care of everything. We had the best guides and easy transfers, and we loved every minute of the cherry blossom experience.
