Xugana Island Lodge
Okavango Delta, Botswana
Why we love it
Xugana Lagoon is widely recognised as the most spectacular permanent water site in the entire Okavango Delta, which itself is Africa’s largest and most awe-inspiring oasis. The Okavango River rises in the highlands of Angola yet never reaches the sea; instead its immense waters empty over the sands of the Kalahari, where the great thirst of the desert is quenched in a wilderness of freshwater lagoons, channels and islands.
The open-sided thatched lounge, bar and dining areas are set back under the ebony and African Mangosteen tree canopy. The swimming pool, located within the mature gardens in the centre of the island, is a perfect place to relax.
Xugana Island Lodge’s boma and al fresco dining area overlook the Xugana Lagoons expanse of pristine water of this unique delta.
The lodge accommodates just 16 guests in large raised reed and thatch lagoon facing chalets, with en-suite facilities and private viewing decks situated on the shaded fringe of the island.
Guests can either explore the delta by motorboat, mokoro, or take leisurely walks on surrounding islands in the concession. This provides the opportunity to experience a classic Okavango Delta safari. Bird-watching opportunities are outstanding, and fishing for bream and tiger-fish is offered.
Disappear into the bush as you set out on foot to discover smaller aspects that are often missed on game drives, such as insects.
Glide through the bush in a traditional wooden canoe to observe riverside life, ranging from colourful frogs to elephants.
Explore deeper into the Okavango's channels to see wildlife from a different perspective, including hiding crocodiles and bathing hippos.
"Head out into the Okavango in a 4x4 for the chance to spot some of Botswana's most beautiful animals in their natural habitat. "
With an expert guide, watch as nocturnal animals steal the spotlight of Botswana's wilderness, and you might even see mating leopards.
Grab your binoculars and tick off as many of Botswana's native and migratory species as you can - all from the comfort of your deck.
Try and beat the country's record of a 16kg tigerfish as you cast a line into the Delta's waterways.
See the Okavango from a truly magnificent perspective, high up in the sky, and with no doors for unobstructed views of the wildlife below.

The Pitchers
We had the most amazing time! John Barclay and his team were very special and the mobile safari exclusive and superb. Moremi was very quiet with few other tourists – no more than a dozen other vehicles seen in four days. Macatoo was also excellent with good riding and game. We were so grateful for the help that you offered when our BA flights went wrong. Many thanks again for the superb service and recommendations which made for a great holiday.
