La Paz

Bolivia

La Paz is Bolivia’s administrative capital city (while Sucre remains its constitutional capital), and at around 11,893ft (3,635m) it’s the highest administrative capital city in the world. When you fly into La Paz airport, you’re actually arriving into the adjacent city of El Alto, which is located another 500m or so higher, so you will most definitely feel the altitude when you arrive. La Paz is overlooked by the snow-capped Mount Illimani and is bustling with markets of all kinds branching out of its old historic centre. The streets in La Paz are really alive – you’ll find Aymara ladies going about their daily errands in their traditional clothes, consisting of bowler hats and colourful hand-woven ponchos. In the markets you’ll find ‘witchcraft’ stalls with all kinds of traditional herbal medicines (including dried llama foetuses!), bustling street food stalls, and just about anything and everything you could possibly be looking for.
