Amankora Punakha Lodge

Punakha

Crossing the suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River – where prayer flags add a splash of colour to the otherwise lushly green landscape – brings you to the captivating oasis of Amankora Punakha. Built around a traditional Bhutanese farmhouse, once the summer residence of the chief abbot of Bhutan, the lodge maintains the character of its history in the vegetable-dye wall paintings, but balances it with more contemporary lines in the suites. Whether lying by the infinity pool with its views over rice terraces or exploring Punakha Dzong and the 15th-century ‘fertility temple’ of Chimi Lhakhang, time here feels wonderfully slow and relaxed.

The 12 suites are spacious and calming, with traditional wood-burning stoves for when the temperatures dip, and a window seat for soaking in the views of orange orchards and rice terraces. The restful spa focuses on grounding, nourishing and purifying treatments, aided by the steam room and yoga. Dining is equally restorative and nourishing, with both western and Bhutanese dishes served in the snug dining room or the outdoor dining terrace. If the dishes pique your interest, a visit to the morning market with the chef and a cooking class at the lodge will add recipes and techniques to your repertoire.
