Why we love it
The Victoria Falls is where the wide Zambezi River simply drops some 100 meters into a narrow gorge. The Falls lie across the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and Livingstone is the town on the Zambian side. Called “Mosi-oa-Tunya”, (the smoke that thunders) in the local language, the Falls is one of the seven wonders of the world and when you first come to Zambia, Livingstone is a must visit destination.
Set on a hill bordering the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and overlooking unspoilt bush, Stanley Safari Lodge is only three kilometres from Victoria Falls. The views are splendid: the spray of the Falls in the distance, the mighty Zambezi River
and on top of that yet another beautiful African sunset.
Each of the 10 rooms is individually designed and decorated with local materials. Accommodation ranges from double rooms, to the honeymoon suite – with both its own fireplace and plunge pool. All cottages have their own private garden and dining area, while the suites have private plunge pools. Six rooms are open sided and the remainder are closed. The main house provides the setting for French style cuisine; alternatively dining under the stars on the lawn or in the privacy of own room is possible.
Take a gentle stroll from the local market through the indigenous rainforest cloaking the falls, to get some of the best views of the cascades and the rainbows of this World Heritage Site.
During low water periods, head to the lip of the falls where Livingstone first glimpsed the111m drop, or test your nerves with the ultimate Zambezi jacuzzi: the Devil's Pool.
Named after the Bogart and Hepburn classic, cruise down the Zambezi at sunset on this restored Edwardian steamer with endless gin and tonics.
Head upstream at dusk along the shores of the national park with an experienced guide to see a host of animals enjoying a drink from the river.
Set off in your canoe from Sindabezi Island, to paddle downstream with your guide and see the best wildlife of the Upper Zambezi, including some must-see water birds.
Swoop down into the Songwe Gorge and over the river's ten rapids before hovering above the 111m drop of the Victoria Falls.
Explore this national park with a game drive, and try spot the only two white rhino in Zambia, as well as endemic Thorneycroft's giraffe, elephant, bushbuck vervets and buffalo.
Experience the authentic reality of life in rural Zambia, where you can meet the village's chief and witness crop harvesting and sorghum beer brewing.

The team at True Travel had a simple brief: to send us on the world’s best family safari. As soon as our boat headed down the Zambezi, it all kicked off; we passed a herd of hippos, a lazy crocodile and a giraffe drinking nonchalantly on the riverbank. A magical experience from beginning to end. Nothing was too much trouble and if we had any issue that needed resolving, there was always someone on hand to do this. Before and after, they were off the charts – simply an awesome team.
