Moremi Game Reserve

Botswana

The Moremi was the first reserve in Africa that was established by local residents. Concerned about the rapid depletion of wildlife in their ancestral lands due to uncontrolled hunting and cattle encroachment, the Batawana people of Ngamiland took the bold initiative to proclaim Moremi a game reserve in 1963. It is the only officially protected area of the Okavango Delta, and as such holds tremendous scientific, environmental, and conservation importance.Set in the north of Botswana, the Moremi Game Reserve is the beating heart of the Okavango Delta. Surrounded by the Delta’s flood plains, this is an incredibly rich wildlife area and offers both wet and dry safari activities. The Game Reserve is primarily made up of the landmass known as ‘Chief’s Island’, a large dry area famed for its excellent predator action. The cats here are relaxed and relatively easy to find, which in turn has attracted some very high-quality camps which are now regarded by many as the finest in Africa. The surrounding water channels off Chief’s Island are also considered as some of the most beautiful mokoro spots in the whole of the Okavango Delta.
