Ernest Shackleton, a man who leaves behind him an incredible legacy, forging a journey across the Antarctic, into the Weddell Sea and onto South Georgia. This fascinating odyssey trace the movements of his famed expedition in a true commitment to adventure.
Across the Drake Passage
The Antarctic Sound to Elephant Island
Elephant Island to South Georgia
In 1914, the voyage of the Endurance ship began in Shackleton’s pursuit of the South Pole. Before long however, the ship became trapped in the ice of the Weddell Sea for an astounding 11 months.
Now, over 100 years later, you will forge your own voyage to the Weddell Sea, where, as recently as 2022, the ship was once again discovered, mostly intact. From the tip of Ushuaia, board the Sylvia Earle expedition vessel and cross the Drake Passage, famously nicknamed the ‘Drake Shake’, thanks to the turbulent swells often at play.
Paying homage to the pioneering conservationist, Dr Sylvia Earle, this ship is certified 100% climate neutral and has extraordinary design features that protect and preserve the environments it travels to, a far cry from the simplistic nature of the Endurance vessel. Set foot on the Antarctic continent and enjoy excursions to the tune of zodiac cruises, whale spotting and sea kayaking.
Pushing onwards, you sail to the Antarctic Sound, known as the gateway to the Weddell Sea, where Shackleton’s own ship met its fate. After the sinking of the Endurance, Shackleton and his 28 men floated on an iceberg across the ocean before reaching Elephant Island. This is where you will next venture, through tabular icebergs that break the surface of the sea and onto the Island itself.
From here, your final leg takes you to South Georgia, on a path that Shackleton blindly executed over 15 days in search of rescue for the rest of his team, left back on Elephant Island.
Spot fur seals, penguin colonies and birds whose wingspans create safe cover as you cruise through the ocean. On arrival, hike from Fortuna Bay to Stromness where Shackleton boarded the Chilean tug the “Yelcho’ to rescue the remaining members of the team; every single person survived.
This journey, an ode to the great adventurers who have come before us, celebrates the epic extremes of our Earth. Despite being inspired by Shackleton, this adventure is yours. Challenge your spirit, ignite your adrenaline and make your mark on a moment in history that will be, almost literally, frozen in time.
