Nelson is the second oldest settled city in New Zealand and the oldest in the South Island. Nelson is situated in a region often known as Nelson Tasman or the “Top of the South.” It is actually slightly north of the capital city of Wellington when you look at it on a map, separated by the cook straits that many ferry across.
Both artists and businesses gravitate in this region, whether its the scenery, lifestyle or possibly both.
The Nelson Tasman region’s Abel Tasman National Park offers well-formed tracks amidst a stunning coastal environment. The track itself is 51km, but can easily be broken up into smaller sections for day walkers.
The Heaphy track is also one of New Zealand greatest walks. Combine these many walks with local lunches and wine from nearby vineyards of Marlborough and kayaking expedition in Abel Tasman, your days will be accomplished. Pods of dolphins and little blue penguins should be spotted.
