Peru is a perfect family holiday destination, due to its diverse landscapes offering activities for all interests and all ages. Peru has a fascinating history and a number of ancient archaeological sites, epic hiking opportunities, adrenaline packed activities such as kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, water rafting, camping and mountain biking, fantastic birdlife and wildlife spotting with the Amazon rainforest, as well as beautiful quaint towns full of rich indigenous culture, art and handmade crafts and a truly outstanding culinary scene.

At True we can offer some particularly family-friendly activities in a number of different areas in Peru, some of which I’m going to outline below:

Lima

Food is a big part of any trip to Lima, with the Peruvian culinary scene becoming increasingly sought-after. We can offer customised street food tours, where you can meet the unsung heroes of Peruvian gastronomy in their small ‘huariques’. You’ll be able to visit the ‘barras’ which are fast-served, non-full service restaurants which have become the latest whim of food bloggers and connoisseurs. We can arrange private chocolate tasting (with coffee pairing for the adults) which will open up the family’s senses to the world of the rich Peruvian varieties which differ according to the season, the region and the blend – I can guarantee you’ll never eat chocolate or drink coffee in the same way again!

We can also customise the Larco museum visit to suit families and offer fun cultural nuances that young learners will love. Lima has a well known light show, known as the Magical Water Fountains, where you can spend an evening wandering through the park and visiting all of the colourful light spectacles through water fountains and statues of varying shapes and sizes. Some of the younger ones might also enjoy an introductory graffiti class in the bohemian neighbourhood of Callao where they can admire some amazing street art and then take part in it themselves! Finally, the Palmoino Islands offers an exciting family day out starting with a boat journey followed by the opportunity to swim with the sea lions!

Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley offers beautiful mountains and amazing scenery, dotted with local communities, villages and ancient ruins. For families, we can offer a visit to the textile museum where the children will have the chance to feed llamas and alpacas. We can also organise a full immersion into the heart of the Andean culture, visiting a charming Andean community where you can discover the textiles and weaving process and learn about the Aramu people and their customs and traditions. We can arrange special picnic lunches near famous ruins, painting classes in spectacular locations with views of the glaciers in the area, as well as activities such as kite flying beside the Urubamba river.

Cusco

Cusco is a beautiful city, a fantastic mix of Incan culture and architecture with that of the Spanish colonial period. Here, families love our chocolate workshops where you can create your very own chocolate bar. Our signature treasure hunt is always a great day of exploration and family fun – learning and discovering the lost treasures of the Inca Warrior. We can also arrange Andean musical instrument workshops, where you can learn how to play traditional instruments and even build your own ‘zampoña’ to take home! For those arty families, we can arrange a ceramic painting workshop where you can paint your own ‘Pukara’ bulls!

Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is also a fantastic place for families and most of the activities that the lodges organise are naturally very family friendly, consisting of nature walks and boat trips that will have you spotting the likes of monkeys, sloths, beautiful tropical birds, iguanas, snakes, caiman, giant otters, pink dolphins and more. There are also opportunities for you to visit the local communities, get to know the children of the village and play games and sports with them, which is always popular with our younger travellers!

Overall, Peru should be first on your list if you’re looking for an all-round destination that will have something of interest for everyone in your group. We specialise in entirely tailor-made itineraries and are experts in putting together a trip that will be just right for each and every traveller.
