A Continent in a Country

As Earth’s fourth-largest island and following 88 million years of evolution apart from mainland Africa, Madagascar is simply overwhelming in its variety. Quite simply, statistics are what demonstrates this most effectively: 90% of Madagascan wildlife is endemic and of the 14,883 plant species, 80% are found nowhere else on earth. These stats extend to marine life, not to mention the cultural diversity, with eighteen ethnic subgroups whose genetics comprise an equal blend of East African and Southeast Asian heritage.

3,000 Miles of Coastline

Blessed with both Indian Ocean and Mozambican Channel coastlines, the beaches and coastlines across Madagascar offer something for everyone. You’ll find big surf-breaks in the south, whilst the north is a scuba diving bucket list destination. Throughout the year, there’s world-class blue water fishing, from bonefish in the west to blue marlin in the east and everything in between. As for accommodation, the options range from the rustic but beautiful Manafiafy to the north of Fort Dauphine, to the Relais Chateau Anjajavy on the northwest coast. For those looking for the next generation in accommodation and experience, Miavana is second to none.

Madland

Unless you are planning to privately charter throughout your holiday, or route straight into somewhere like Nosy Be for some beach time, pack your patience. Anywhere combining distances of this scale and an almost complete lack of infrastructure can prove trying at times, but give yourself ample time to get around and don’t try to fit too much into a shorter trip. If you approach Madagascar in the right way for a tailormade itinerary, you will be amply rewarded for it.

Lesley

It was fabulous. I was planning to write a message with detailed feedback. It’s a unique place and provided a very special experience for the both of us. The holiday was fantastic and Madagascar is a very special country. Masoala was maybe one of my favourite experiences ever. The lodge and the setting are beautiful, the activities on point.
