It has to be the discovery that travel brings. The anxious excitement of going somewhere to discover all the things that you will be exposed to, how a new place can mean so much in a short period of time. Even places you have been to before have that ability to show you new things about themselves or even better, yourself.
It would have to be a new place, with unique elements to discover in terms of food, culture, music and outdoors, allowing me to fully immerse myself and understand the place I am visiting. Of course, if we can add a stunning beach or an incredible mountain range nearby, that would be just perfect.
There are a couple things I would reccommend.
Packing as light as possible is one. You really only need to take what is essential, no more, and then get things on the go – these make the best memories.
Secondly, it really pays to do some research on how to understand and interact with the locals – they are the real soul of the place you are visiting. I also recommend doing what locals do, eating what and where they eat, going where they go, and always asking them for advice or recommendations – they are the real experts and in my experience locals are always happy to help.
I think I have been lucky enough to enjoy quite a few unique moments, but one that stands out would be a diving trip off the island of Koh Pha Ngan in Thailand – a beautiful, sunny day with gorgeous calm water. There was delicious fresh fruit on board, great music, lovely people and one of the most spectacular moments – swimmming right up close with an enormous whaleshark.
