Nestled amongst the fragrant blue pines of the Phobjikha valley, Gangtey Lodge boasts far-reaching views over the forest-clad hills, a 17th century monastery and traditional farm houses. Home to the sacred black-neck cranes, this secluded valley is a treasure trove of opportunities, from mountain biking to evening prayers at the Gangtey Shedra where 300 monks study. After a day of hiking through the hills, a selection of in-room treatments can soothe body and mind, though a dip in the hot stone bath is not to be missed.
With sweeping views of the valley, the 12 rooms thoughtfully honour the heritage of the area with a traditional fireplace, Bhutanese furnishings and neutral, warming tones, while freestanding baths sit in front of the expansive window to offer a soak with a view. Dining here is pleasantly relaxed – drinks can be served on the veranda, meals are served in the living room, and the lodge offers a range of unique culinary experiences, from dinner in the Woodshed to lunch with a blessing at the Gangtey Goenpa and Bhutanese cooking lessons.
Perched at 2,250 metres, Amankora Paro is tucked away amongst the pine trees on the edge of a village above Paro town and offers access to the monasteries, museums and temples of the region, including the renowned Tiger’s Nest.
Crossing the suspension bridge over the Mo Chhu River – where prayer flags add a splash of colour to the otherwise lushly green landscape – brings you to the captivating oasis of Amankora Punakha.
