Why we love it
Surrounded by the diverse Waterberg region and overlooking the Palala Valley lies Leobo Private Reserve, a 12 000-acre estate encompassing rugged rocks, bushveld savannah, natural streams and an abundance of wildlife. Teeming with plains game, bird life and a crocodile named Stevie, there are no time constraints, no rules (except safety) and no limits. It is one of only a handful of sole-use private reserves in South Africa allowing guests full access to the entire estate and all of its facilities. Complete privacy and exclusivity is what Leobo Private Reserve is all about.
As the name suggests Leobo Observatory houses a research grade observatory dome equipped with a high-tech computer operated 20 inch telescope. Due to the reserve’s remote location, the sky is extraordinarily clear. A local astronomer can be booked for starlit safaris or the more experienced user can enjoy a selection of state-of-the-art astro photography equipment for deep sky imaging.
All bedrooms and bathrooms are luxurious spaces. Both main bathrooms have baths and showers and the master bedroom features an outdoor shower. Slippers and robes are provided and all electrical outlets cater for appliances from the UK, South Africa and Europe. Each bedroom has a private safe.
The heated infinity pool provides stunning views of the valley. You can relax in comfortable sun beds and enjoy the best Africa has to offer. The deck has a covered veranda where guests can unwind (or doze) in front of an open fire in the evenings.
The living area is perfect: whether you’re dining under the hippo skeleton chandelier or relaxing in front of the fire, this open space is perfect for entertaining and relaxing. The mezzanine level above is ideal for children who want to watch a movie before bed or for when you’re catching up on news.
The sophisticated library is nestled under the dome of the Observatory. It has two levels separated by a staircase. You’re welcome to enjoy any of the books during your stay. This space is also an office, with an open fireplace for relaxing with a drink.
The nursery has a triple bunk bed and bedroom for a nanny or, if you need more space, extra guests. It is completely self-contained – with a separate bathroom and kitchenette.
A flight of stairs will take you to the sun deck. With its comfortable sofas, it is a wonderful place to enjoy a drink. On cooler evenings, you can relax in the jacuzzi and take in the panoramic views of the Palala Valley.
The Observatory is serviced by a butler, maid and private chef who will customise a menu based on your preferences. Meals are enjoyed inside, outside or at one of several beautiful locations in the bush. You are also welcome to give the chef the night off and cook your own traditional South African braai if you like.
For larger groups there are over spill chalets.

Absolutely amazing holiday. Garonga is heaven! We did everything possible and our guide was brilliant and hilarious. I can definitely recommend True Travel for their excellent advice and professionalism – they clearly are very knowledgeable about where they send their clients and made sure we had a worry-free holiday that perfectly suited us. We were particular grateful for the collection off our flight and help onto our transfer in Johannesburg, which included a very nifty queue jump due to their reputation!
