In the centre of the plaza, a flag the size of a swimming pool billows in the breeze, watched by a ring of imposing colonial buildings. This was once the ceremonial centre of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan – a poignant reminder of Mexico’s tapestried past. From here, you are within walking distance of an eclectic mix of contemporary galleries, museums filled with classical art and ancient artefacts and some of the best restaurants in town.
