Kaya Mawa
Likoma Island, Malawi
Why we love it
Kaya Mawa is located on the south-western tip of Likoma Island in the middle of Lake Malawi. The lodge uses the natural surroundings to create a getaway lodge of unique character, imagination and very special ambiance. The island is covered with mango trees and ancient baobabs and encircled by glorious sandy beaches and rocky coves.
Stone and teak-framed thatched accommodation includes two family houses and luxurious suites that are ideal for honeymooners. Each room faces the lake with a large hand crafted bed and en-suite bathroom. All accommodation has its own private terraces with most having direct access to the water.
Ndomo House: A private villa that consists of four bedrooms, three en-suites, a sitting room, a family kitchen, study, pool, private beach and five terraces. This house is fully staffed with
a nanny, cook, housekeeper, ground staff and watchmen. It is located on the South West corner of the island with uninterrupted views across to the neighbouring island and on to mainland Malawi. A year round sunset is a secret surprise. It is ideal for those wanting complete privacy from the outside world.
The restaurant is set to one side of the bar and is used for buffet breakfasts and lunches. Kaya Mawa has many different areas where dinners are served: on a beach, on the decking platform or in the gazebo. An eclectic mix of simple and delicious international cuisine enjoyed at your own private surprise table. The bar and restaurant are split into a multi-level deck and offers seating at the bar or comfy sofas. The bar, just metres from the water, offers fantastic sunset views all the way to the south of the lake.

It’s been nearly ten years since we last visited Malawi, that time we just went to Lake Malawi after we’d been on safari in Zambia. This time we wanted to experience a bit more. It was amazing. We loved the Nyika Plateau and our stay at Mkulumadzi was one of our most memorable safaris. I don’t think there’s anywhere better on earth than Kaya Mawa – it’s the dream!
