WILDLIFE SAFARI: JULY TO OCTOBER
If you want to witness the great migration of Masai Mara, then this season is perfect. Keep in mind this is the busiest season of the year, which means expenses will be higher.
But the thrill of watching millions of wildebeests, antelopes, and zebras as they traverse the region and cross lakes is truly worth it. The animals cover almost 3,000 kilometres during their journey from the Serengeti plains to the Masai Mara.
Animals are easier to spot during this period, as the bushes are less dense compared to other seasons, so it is the perfect time for a safari. On the weather front, skies are often clear and sunny with very little chance of any torrential downpours. You can see our guidance on what to pack for Safari here.
BIRD WATCHING: OCTOBER TO APRIL
Kenya is home to almost 1,000 bird species, which is about 11% of the entire bird population in the world. This season is especially a treat for bird lovers, as millions of birds migrate from Europe to Africa, with about 230 species arriving in Kenya by October.
Best spots to watch are Lake Bogoria in October and Lake Nakuru during January and February. The lakes are abundantly covered with algae during this time, attracting flamingos by the millions. Other bird species to keep an eye out for include pygmy falcons and yellow-bellied wattle eyes.
BIRTHING SEASON: DECEMBER TO MARCH
If you like watching thousands of baby animals being born and roaming the wild trying to learn the basics of survival, then December to March is best. All animals, including zebras and wildebeest, give birth to an estimated 8,000 babies each day during this season.
You’ll also come across conflicts between big cats and wildebeest as the latter try to protect their young.
COASTAL EXPERIENCE
Located by the Indian Ocean, Kenya’s coastline is home to a number of beautiful beaches that offer a relaxing destination for most of the year, except March to May. The sands are white, surrounded by brilliant blue waters.
Mombasa, Diani, Malindi and Lamu are some of the most sought-after beach destinations in the country. You can also participate in various activities like snorkelling, diving, and other water sports.
If you sail towards the ocean, you can explore a variety of sea life. From June, you can spot numerous whale species, but it’s from October to April that whale shark safaris become popular with tourists. Between August and October, yellowfin tuna can be spotted. And in the month of December, marlins start making an appearance.
So carefully consider what it is that you wish to enjoy in Kenya – beaches, safari, bird watching or the calving season – before choosing when to visit.
