Exquisite white sand lapped by azure blue waters and fringed with palm trees rippling in the warm breeze; the beaches of Zanzibar are all stunning, but each has its own special character. This enchanting island in the Indian Ocean is where Africa and Arabia meet, and the result is magical.
1. NUNGWI BEACH NORTH
With incredible views wherever you look, this is one of the most popular beaches in Zanzibar. It’s certainly the spot for the best of both worlds.
The north side is a tranquil oasis of gorgeous white sand and fishing dhows bobbing on the water. For a lively party atmosphere, head to the west side. Here you’ll find bustling bars and cafes and the ever-present beach boys, all competing to sell you a variety of goodies.
The sunset here is truly spectacular. Enjoy it from the comfort of your hammock or head out to sea on an evening cruise. This is a sea view you won’t forget.
2. PONGWE
This stunning east coast beach is a peaceful little gem that’s well off the beaten track. With fewer bars and restaurants than elsewhere, the crowds don’t tend to head this way.
At high tide, the beach is cut off from the mainland, and the area has a lovely feeling of seclusion and peace – the perfect place for a romantic getaway.
Wander the powder-white sand beach or swim in the calm, turquoise waters. Even internet access here is very limited, so relaxation is guaranteed!
3. PAJE
Located on the south-east coast, this lively beach attracts kite and wind-surfers from around the world. The gentle lagoon waters and steady winds make conditions perfect. Even if you’re a beginner you can still have a go. There are plenty of certified teachers with the latest equipment.
A good selection of bars and cafes will keep you fed and watered. At low tide, the beach is a fascinating spot to explore, as the sand is peppered with rock pools and shellfish.
4. MATEMWE
The unruffled lagoon waters are home to the pristine coral reef of Mnemba Atoll. The reef attracts an incredible host of marine life, including numerous types of fish, dolphins and turtles.
Experience the finest diving in Africa, or simply hire a guide to paddle you out to the reef for a spot of snorkelling.
If you’d prefer to relax, the coconut palm fringed beach has plenty of quieter areas, and the view is absolutely stunning. The Matemwe Beach House could be the perfect base for your explorations.
5. JAMBIANI
This beautiful stretch of soft white sand is popular with locals and visitors alike, so it’s a great place to get acquainted. It’s a cheerful spot with a fine selection of restaurants offering tasty fare.
It’s a good place to watch the world go by. Zanzibari fisherman and seaweed farmers are all at work here, and the local kids enjoy a game of football. Bikes are available for hire if you’d like to explore further, or you could just soak up the view.
