Example Itinerary

Day 1-3

REYKJAVIK, Iceland

  • A warm welcome and introduction excursion around the Reykjanes peninsula
  • Enjoy a gourmet dinner in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik for your first evening in situ

Set among snow-topped mountains and volcanic surrounds, Reykjavik is the energetic gateway city to a land of wild adventures and otherworldly surroundings. The city a must on any Icelandic touring itinerary.

Welcome to Iceland! On arrival into the airport, you will be met by a private driver-guide for an afternoon touring the Reykjanes peninsula.

The Reykjanes peninsula is located on a drift zone between two continents – the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate. It is a unique site where you can find different elements that exist because of the drift zone: geothermal energy, lava fields and other natural phenomena. Take the opportunity to get the local knowledge from your guide for must-do things to see along your way, places to stop for food and which of Iceland’s many outdoor geothermal swimming pools are their favourite. They will deposit you at your hotel for the next couple of nights, where after some downtime we have made you a reservation in one of our favourite restaurants in the city.

On your first full day, enjoy a lazy start or take some time to self explore. Around noon, a private guide will pick you up to take you on a history and food tour on foot. You will stop at a few restaurants to try Icelandic delicacies and see some of the most remarkable sites in downtown Reykjavik.

Day 3-5

SOUTH COAST, Iceland

  • Embark on a Golden Circle Tour to see Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss Waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area
  • Visit Solheimajokull Glacier for a privately guided hike

Discover the myriad of nature’s marvels in Southern Iceland – this region has it all. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore scenic hikes among active volcanoes and dancing geysers, the rich Icelandic heritage offers intrigue for history buffs and foodies will be impressed by the dining scene.

Collect your 4×4 that will be your transport for the remainder of your trip. Exit Reykjavik and embark on your circumnavigation tour around Iceland.

Start with the famous Golden Circle route towards your first hotel, Skalakot Manor Hotel. On the Golden Circle tour, you will see Thingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal area. You should stop for lunch at Fridheimar tomato farm for an educational visit at a working greenhouse producing tomatoes year-round. You can also add a stop at the secret lagoon for a quick dip into a real hot spring – less popular than the Blue Lagoon and far more authentic. Next, drive past Seljalandsfoss waterfall before you reach the wonderful Skalakot Manor Hotel.

The next day, you will drive a short distance to the roots of Solheimajokull Glacier, where you will meet with your private guide for a glacier walk (don’t worry, all your gear is included). Enjoy one of our local recommended restaurants for lunch, or we can arrange a picnic in situ. After lunch, you will go on another private tour on ATVs around the famous black lava beach. This is an opportunity to get far away from the crowds at Reynisfjara and see the impressive and extensive beach in much more privacy.

Day 5-6

SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK, Iceland

  • Hike to Svartifoss, one of the most unique waterfalls in South-Iceland
  • Explore the scenic landscape and a selection of hiking trails in Skaftafell National Park

Head for Iceland’s southeast coast. At Jokulsarlon, the ancient blue ice of Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier meets the sea.

Check out of Skalakot and continue the drive further east, winding along the south coast of Iceland en route to your next hotel – Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon. The many natural treasures of Iceland’s south coast are reachable from here with a car – specifically the Jökulsárlón lagoon.

Along the way, there are many wonderful places to see, but we highly recommend you take the opportunity to visit Fjadrargljufur canyon and Skaftafell National Park, including an easy hike up to the impressive Svartifoss waterfall.

Day 6-7

EGILSSTADIR, Iceland

  • Get close to glaciers on a private Zodiac boat tour across a glacier lagoon
  • Visit Diamond Beach and the icebergs which fill the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon on the black sand beach

Enjoy the verdant and tranquil beauty of eastern Iceland, as well as the peaceful and friendly town of Egilsstadir.

Today, after checking out of the hotel, drive a short 20 minutes to reach Fjallsarlon glacier lagoon, where you will embark on a private zodiac tour on these majestic waters. You will see and feel the floating icebergs next to you and learn more about the residing glaciers from your guide. Drive few minutes further east to the more known Jokulsarlon Glacier lagoon and see Diamond Beach. Continue on to the town of Hofn where you will have a selection of local restaurants for lunch before heading due north to your next overnight stop – Icelandair Hotel Herad.

Day 7-10

MYVATN, Iceland

  • Immerse yourself in Mývatn Nature Baths, a set of geothermally heated pools and steam baths
  • Marvel at Stuðlagil Canyon, one of the most significant and most beautiful basalt columns formations in Iceland

East Iceland is an expansive region, where you can find all of Iceland’s attractive aspects and culture, rich with brilliant birdlife, historic fishing villages and sublime nature. It is also the Icelandic home of reindeer.

Today you will continue your drive to your next destination, Myvatn (approximately 2 hour 50 minutes drive), with some incredible stops along the way. Visit Studlagil Canyon, where you will see some incredible basalt column formations rising high above the piercing blue river that runs through. Enjoy the view as you walk the trails and experience the birdlife. You also have the option to visit Lake Myvatn nature baths to relax after your day on the road.

During your full day in the Myvatn area, your private guide will pick you up after breakfast to show you some of its hidden secrets. Expect to see caves, incredible rock formations at Dimmuborgir and experience other national treasures on this tour.

Day 10-12

HÚSAFELL, Iceland

  • Immerse in Húsafell, a beautiful area placed between lava mountains and Langjokull glacier
  • Marvel at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, which sits at a constant 97 degrees

North Iceland is home to many natural and cultural wonders, many of which are tied to Norse mythology and fascinating tidbits from Iceland’s rich history. It is a corner of the country most tourists do not reach, so it will feel like you have the whole place to yourself.

Today you will have the longest drive of the trip to your next destination, Húsafell, on the west side of Iceland (approximately 5 hours drive).

You will drive through the capital of the north, Akureyri, where you can shop for some local merchandise and walk around the cute downtown area. Further along the drive, you can also go visit the seals on the beach in Hvammstangi (where if you are interested, there is also a seal museum), visit Deildartunguhver bubbling hot spring and stop for a lovely hike along the way.

The next day you will explore the Húsafell area by car and visit Barnafoss and Hraunfossar waterfalls, visit Stedji local brewery and go on a private cave tour to Vidgelmir – the largest cave in Iceland. Afterwards, take a hike with a local to the Húsafell hot spring located a short trek away from the hotel.

Day 12-14

GRINDAVIK, Iceland

  • Stay at one of the most unique hotels in the world
  • Book treatments at the hotels spa as a relaxing final treat before your flight home

An unbeatable final stop, one of the world’s most unique spas – the Blue Lagoon – is an outdoor, geo-thermally heated spa providing an amazing experience that cannot be missed when visiting Iceland.

Today you will drive towards your last destination – the Blue Lagoon area (approximately 2-hour drive). En route, you can visit some of the remarkable museums in Borgarnes, take an enduring hike up to Glymur waterfall or stop in Reykjavik for a bit more time in the capital.

Check into the Retreat Hotel & Spa for your final two nights in Iceland. Take the time to relax in the hotel’s private pools and visit the famous Blue Lagoon.
