A Walking Tour of Chelsea

Princes, painters, pensioners and punks – there is a lot to hear about on the famous Kings Road! The road is probably most closely associated with the Swinging ’60s, but it was originally intended as a royal cut-through to enable King Charles II to visit his royal mistress. Charles had more worthy intentions when he employed Christopher Wren to built the beautiful Chelsea Hospital as a home to veteran soldiers.

You will start your walk in Sloane Square, where expert guide Viv will entertain you with stories of Peter Jones, department store and comfort-zone of the middle classes, and the Royal Court Theatre – home to edgy drama. You will see the site of Mary Quant’s shop Bazaar, which was the epitome of the era. The ’70s saw the Punk Rockers move in; Jimi Hendrix, most of the Rolling Stones and Michael Caine all drank in the Chelsea Potter pub. Today Chelsea is one of the most desirable residential areas in London, but for reasons that Viv will explain, it was much loved by the Bohemian artistic set of the 1900’s, and you will see the homes of the likes of John Singer Sargent, JM Whistler, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Oscar Wilde. Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and 007 all have Chelsea links. There really is something for everyone!
