Your tour is designed to take you from amateur to authority, learning about Wren’s work from the very best source material possible; the City Churches themselves.
You’ll begin by getting familiar with Wren’s tumultuous childhood to understand why he was the man Charles II turned to rebuild London from the ashes of the Great Fire if 1666. As you cut through the city’s tangled medieval streets, you’ll build a lexicon of Wren’s designs by visiting some of his must-see churches, concealed in out-of-the-way courtyards or behind locked oak doors. This experience visits locations with irregular opening hours seldom visited by the casual tourist, in the company of a guide with a lifelong personal and professional connection to the topic.
You’ll finish by tracking back to his masterpiece St Paul’s Cathedral, where you’ll put your new skills to work. You’ll see how you can now trace his earlier experiments in the design of the building itself. Finishing by his memorial, you’ll leave with a fresh understanding of London, and how Wren continues to shape both our cities but also our very ideas of what an architect – and a creative – can be.
