From an 18th-century royal playground to one of the world’s most important collection of trees (there are more than 14,000 of them!) and plants, Kew Gardens is now more crucial than ever as an international powerhouse for botanical research and sustainability. This tour will bring to life the history of the gardens from its iconic Arcadian landscapes to the skulduggery of 19th-century plant hunters and extraordinary forensic mysteries solved today thanks to Kew’s experts.
This tour offers us a chance to learn about the history of royalty, empire, trade and the history of art and garden design as you stroll through more than 300 acres of glorious tree-lined avenues, stunning gardens and marvel at the extraordinary collection of 19th-century botanical drawings by Marianne North. She was the ultimate feminist trailblazer, a great friend of Charles Darwin, and she travelled all over the world on her own to paint plants which became important scientific records. We can create longer experiences to take in multiple sites (including hot houses) and have a picnic in the grounds or end the day taking high tea at the award-winning restaurant, The Botanical, while enjoying an unparalleled view of the Palm House.
Price per private group: 3 hour tour £400, full day tour £800
