Day 1-3

KIBALE NATIONAL PARK, Uganda

Kyaninga Lodge
  • Hike through the Kibale Forest tracking an exuberant chimpanzee family
  • Spot some of the other 13 rare primates and unique flora and fauna in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Begin your Ugandan adventures at the spectacular Kyaninga Lodge for a chance to track chimpanzees through the wild.

Nestled on the edge of an extinct volcanic crater lake at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, the Kyaninga Lodge is the ultimate location to begin your adventure through Uganda. It is located less than an hour from Kibale Forest, known as the primate capital of the world due to its spectacular chimpanzee treks, as well as its 13 other rare primate inhabitants. Spend the morning tracking a chimp family across the forest, watching as they swing through the canopy above you. In the afternoon, head to the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a chance to see some incredible flora and fauna, including the red colobus monkeys, sitatunga antelope, the great blue turaco and the rare papyrus gonolek birds. Back at the lodge you can take a guided nature walk around the beautiful Kyaninga Crater Lake, or simply unwind after your trek on your private cottage terrace with a gin and tonic in hand.

Day 3-5

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK, Uganda

  • Cruise down the Kazinga Channel in between the great Edward and George Lakes to see pods of hippos, herds of elephants and buffalo
  • Track chimpanzees through the sunken forest of the Kyambura Gorge

Spend two nights in safari paradise, embarking on game drives, boat cruises and forest treks to see the national park’s incredible animals

Embark on a scenic transfer through the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains to arrive at the Kyambura Gorge Lodge. This lodge is located on the edge of the Queen Elizabeth National Park and has sweeping views of the rolling savanna, the distant mountains of the moon and the sunken Kyambura Gorge. Embark on a chimpanzee trek through the Kyambura Gorge to spot these primates in the sunken forest, or try and spot a leopard in the thicket on an early morning game drive. Cruise down the Kazinga Channel to see great concentrations of hippo as well as elephants, buffalo and wading birds who come down to drink at the river. Lastly is the lodge’s VSPT’s community projects that support the area’s tourist initiatives. Guests can have a tour of the Women’s Coffee Cooperative, enjoy an Omumushaka Dance Group Performance or a Reclaimed Wetland Tour.

Day 5-7

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK, Uganda

  • Trek through the primaeval Bwindi Forest to track a family of endangered mountain gorillas
  • Discover the hunter-gatherer traditions of the Batwa Pygmies – the native tribal inhabitants of the forest

Mountain gorillas are known to be frequent visitors to the Bwindi Lodge, your last stay on your Ugandan adventure.

Travel via Ishasha to see if you can spot the unusual behaviour of the tree-climbing lions of the area, before arriving at the luxurious Bwindi Eco Lodge. The lodge is one of a kind as the only thing separating it from the primaeval Bwindi Forest is a stream, which means that the mountain gorillas are frequent visitors to the lodge! You can also trek through the Impenetrable Forest, immersing yourself in the area’s unique flora and fauna, before getting up to seven metres close to a family of endangered mountain gorillas. Here guests can also take part in some of VSPT’s community projects: you can discover the traditions of the indigenous people of the Bwindi forest, the Batwa Pygmies, enjoy sundowners at the community-run Bwindi Bar, or visit the Bwindi Community Hospital. All experiences on offer give guests a unique glimpse into conservation and community as well as providing a truly special Ugandan jungle safari.

Rose

It was absolutely magical. As soon as we turned the corner and saw the first gorilla, I started to cry because I was so happy. They were also fantastic lodge recommendations from the True Travel team! Bwindi Lodge was hands down my favourite, amd we also loved getting out of the car and hiking to get there. As you’ll see, my dream of being close to the gorillas really came true. We had such a wonderful time, and thank you for your help making it come to life.
