Tongole Wilderness Lodge
Lake Malawi, Malawi
Why we love it
Situated on the banks of the winding Bua River, deep in the Miombo woodlands of the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, Tongole Wilderness Lodge offers its guests the ultimate eco-luxury experience.
The lodge has four double suites and a two-bedroom cottage, all of which benefit from breathtaking views over the river. Additional single beds can be added but there is great emphasis on an intimate and personal experience and therefore Tongole limits its guests to a maximum of ten at any one time. The two-bedroom cottage is ideal for families and couples wanting extra space and privacy. It has two bedrooms, one with a super-king size double bed, the second a twin/double, a spacious lounge and dining room and private deck area overlooking the river.
Each chalet has been built from locally sourced materials and fabrics, by the local community. All rooms are open fronted with spacious, private wooden decks offering you the
opportunity to sit in peace and enjoy panoramic views of the river below and the Miombo woodlands beyond.
Super king size or twin double beds are complimented by luxurious en-suite bathrooms bedecked with twin marble basins, a flush loo, a wet room hot water shower as well as a inviting bathtub that doubles as a plunge pool with spectacular views.
The whole lodge offers a peaceful and calming haven during the heat of the day and incorporates the very best of Malawian culture. The main mess area is a short walk from your chalet and includes a open lounge, dining area and bar. There are various decking areas for guests to relax and enjoy the sprawling views – perfect for guests to enjoy a romantic and private dinner – and the ‘high seat’ area enables you to see right out over the tree tops and into the distance.
Discover the acres of manicured gardens and vineyards on a tour with the lodge's head gardener, as well as visiting the vegetable garden.
Spend an afternoon with one of the lodge's chefs to learn how to recreate some of the delicious food using the lodge's homegrown produce.
Relax body and soul by treating yourself to a massage using all-natural New Zealand essential oils, filled with health benefits.
Visit the lodge's wine shack to taste a selection of the region's best wines, matched to your tastes by the onsite sommelier.
Enjoy dinner with a show by snagging the Chef's Bench table, with an intimate view into the kitchen to watch the lodge's chefs cooking your dinner.
Cycle along the endless stretch of coast along the Marlborough Sounds, dotted with what are considered some of the best trails in the country.
Challenge your friends and family to a competitive game of tennis out on the grass courts - the perfect way to spend some time in the sun.
Soak up the sunshine or swim some laps in the heated outdoors pool, peacefully secluded amongst the lodge's acres of garden.

It’s been nearly ten years since we last visited Malawi, that time we just went to Lake Malawi after we’d been on safari in Zambia. This time we wanted to experience a bit more. It was amazing. We loved the Nyika Plateau and our stay at Mkulumadzi was one of our most memorable safaris. I don’t think there’s anywhere better on earth than Kaya Mawa – it’s the dream!
