Why we love it
Gorges Lodge has arguably one of the most spectacular views in Southern Africa. It offers a unique Victoria Falls experience from its peaceful and idyllic base on the edge of the Batoka Gorge.
The main lodge area and the ten stone-under-thatch chalets are set in a magnificent, lush indigenous garden. Each chalet has stunning views; stretching right the way across the gorge and down to the Zambezi River, flowing 200 meters below.
Each individual en-suite stone chalet has a private garden and decked veranda: the ideal place to watch the sunrise (or set) over the Zambezi. You can look on, as black eagles and lanner falcons soar overhead. Gorges lodge is home to an incredible population of raptors, as well as a stunning array of butterflies and wild flora. Several tame bushbuck, baboon and vervet monkey roam the grounds, in the hope of finding a treat.
The main lodge, built on a stilted decking of indigenous hard wood, is in the middle of the ten chalets; teetering on the very edge of the gorge. The elegantly decorated lounge, dining room and bar offer extraordinary views over the gorge into Zambia.
There are two single storey honeymoon suites: Veranda overlooking the gorge, mains electricity with backup
generator, overhead fan, mini bar, en-suite lounge, en-suite changing room with basin, bathroom and bath and a separate shower, bath and toilet.
There are four single story twin bedded suites: Veranda overlooking the gorge, mains electricity with backup generator, overhead fan, mini bar, en-suite lounge, en-suite changing room with basin, bathroom and bath and a separate shower, bath and toilet.
There are four double storey twin bedded suites: Upstairs bedroom and balcony featuring excellent gorge views, downstairs changing room that can be converted into a child’s room, mains electricity with back-up generator, bathroom and bath and a separate shower, bath and toilet.
Little Gorges is perched on the edge of the Batoka Gorge next to main Gorges. This tented extension of Gorges overlooks the dramatic junction of the Dibu Dibu River and the Zambezi, where black eagles and lanner falcons nest in the sheer cliff faces. Construction of the luxury tents in this rugged, rocky and broken terrain necessitated careful planning and feats of engineering and is a wonderful alternative to the main Gorges chalets while still providing all the same comforts.
Stretch your legs, go on a guided adventure through the gorge and watch the sunset over the Zambezi River at Peregrine Point, enjoying some snacks and sundowners.
Watch the aerobatics of the black Verreaux eagles that nest in the Batoka gorge at the lodge, or spot lanner falcons, peregrine falcons and augur buzzards.
Join in the fun with some traditional Zimbabwean dancing and drumming with a local dance troupe, after some sundowners overlooking the Batoka gorge.
Hold on tight and paddle down the Zambezi River and its class five rapids for a true adventure thrill, before an afternoon gorge climb.
Take to the skies for a chance to see the glory of the Victoria Falls and the Zambezi National Park from above, in a small aircraft or a helicopter.
Canyon your way through the gorge and try your hand at some rock climbing before cooling off with a quick dip in the river.
Visit a local rural village to learn about traditional Zimbabwean life, or take a trip to one of the schools surrounding the lodge for a class interaction.
Take the plunge and bungee jump off the bridge linking Zambia and Zimbabwe, attempt the gorge swing, or for a more leisurely activity, zip wire across the gorge

We were bundled into a vehicle and dashed off to see a leopard within the first 30 minutes of arriving; it was an AWESOME start. Our guide completely made the entire experience. He was an exceptional birder and his best party trick was to point out the bird and then tell us the exact page we could find it in our book. We combined Zimbabwe with Mozambique, and our beach hotel felt like a complete hidden gem. The sand is like ‘moon dust’ and the hospitality and food were fantastic.
