Visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is not as well known as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, as Bwindi is home to almost half of the world’s population of Mountain Gorillas. However, this is a very special national park for those who know about it. The park shares a border with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, and as such, guests who visit Mgahinga have the opportunity to have a similar gorilla trekking experience, but importantly at half the price.
The landscape is certered around three magnificent and extinct volcanoes – Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Mugabura – all of which can be hiked up by those who have the stamina!
As with Volcanoes National Park, Mgahinga is home to the endagered mountain gorilla, but also golden monkeys, blue monkeys, elephant, buffalo and a fantastic variety of bird species. It is in fact a very special family of mountain gorillas who inhabit the park, with a particularly strong number of male silverback gorillas.
Many visitors like to include Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, not only for the wildlife, but for the cultural aspect available in this area. The park is home to the last remaining indigenous Batwa people, a tribe of hunter-gatherers who were the first people to inhabit the forest here in Uganda. By visiting this area you are not only able to learn about their way of life, but also are supporting their village that still remains today thanks to the work of Volcanoes Safaris.
These example itineraries are here to get you inspired, but no two True Travel holidays are the same. Our Uganda experts start planning each trip with a blank piece of paper, designing every itinerary 100% personalised to you.

It was absolutely magical. As soon as we turned the corner and saw the first gorilla, I started to cry because I was so happy. They were also fantastic lodge recommendations from the True Travel team! Bwindi Lodge was hands down my favourite, amd we also loved getting out of the car and hiking to get there. As you’ll see, my dream of being close to the gorillas really came true. We had such a wonderful time, and thank you for your help making it come to life.
