Kwessi Dunes is the first property launched in this region of Namibia by Natural Selection Safaris – an organisation aiming to be part of a ‘conservation solution’ for Africa’s wildlife and wild places. The lodge is set in a private 15,000 hectare reserve, itself a small section of the gargantuan conservation success story that is the NamibRand Nature Reserve. This 200,000 hectare wilderness is a living example of the power nature has to heal itself and regenerate a rich desert landscape after years of commercial farming. The lodge was newly opened in 2020 with just 12 canvas and thatched chalets. Each chalet features high ceilings and air conditioning keep the rooms cool and comfortable for those hot Summer months. All rooms are en-suite with indoor and outdoor showers as well as outdoor sleeping decks for ultimate stargazing. At the main area you’ll find a dining area, bar and library all air conditioned and all featuring glass walls and doors for an uninterrupted view of the spectacular desert scenery. The 200,000 hectares of the NamibRand offer an endless playground for guests to explore. Morning and afternoon nature drives take you right out into the Namib Desert, it’s astonishing how much life there is to discover in such a harsh environment. One of the best ways to really gain an understanding of this unique habitat is on foot with a guided nature walk. Visitors to Kwessi Dunes also have the opportunity to explore by horse back and quad-bike. An opportunity to explore further afield but outside the confines of a safari vehicle. Take to the sky with a dawn flight over this magnificent landscape by hot air balloon. Helicopter and fixed wing scenic flights are also available, as are day trips to the Sossusvlei. Once you’ve finished with all that come back for cooling swim in the pool, a soothing massage at the lodge and a well deserved sundowner. Then refuel with the freshly prepared creations from the kitchen.
